This Robinhood and Gamestop thing...

Can someone explain it to me? I'm laughably poor in my knowledge of such financial affairs.

I understand short selling (pretty much), but what I don't get it is - are the "little guys" holding these stocks simply out of principle in order to harm the hedge funds etc., or is there some actual profit in it for them? And if so, at what point do "the little guys" holding the stock actually "get out" and make an actual profit?

Or do I have that all wrong?
